CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) -- A central Pennsylvania man has been charged in the stabbing death of his elderly mother.
Fifty-four-year-old Paul Tolbert of Carlisle was charged with criminal homicide and robbery in what prosecutors are calling the "brutal, violent killing" of 85-year-old Mary Tolbert on Tuesday.
Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed said Paul Tolbert is also charged with tampering with evidence for allegedly trying to clean up the crime scene.
Authorities allege Tolbert stabbed his mother to death and stole her money to buy crack cocaine.
Carlisle Police Chief Stephen Margeson said the slaying is the borough's first homicide in about five years.
Mary Tolbert's body was found in a bedroom inside her apartment and an autopsy is pending.
