FRANKLIN TWP. — A stretch of Route 487 was shut down on Monday afternoon after a pickup slammed into a utility pole.

The impact snapped the pole around 2:45 p.m. and brought down wires, according to officials. The pickup then hit a nearby tree.

Driver Ryan Wayne Cotner, 37, Catawissa, was taken to Geisinger-Bloomsburg Hospital with suspected minor injuries, police said.

Authorities suspect Cotner may have fallen asleep at the wheel. A witness in the opposite lane saw Cotner’s pickup going off the roadway without braking, according to Locust Township Police.

A passing UPS box truck got caught up in the wires hanging overhead. Traffic was snarled on the winding stretch of road. Due to potential hazards, authorities told the trucker to stay out of the truck.

Emergency crews shut down both lanes of traffic, and traffic was routed around the area.

Cotner was heading north at the time. The crash happened near the intersection of Route 487 and Lawrence Drive; Route 487 is known locally as Southern Drive.

Montour Township Police and Catawissa firefighters also responded to the crash.
