Berwick cancels classes for Curry funeral

BERWICK — Classes at Berwick Area School District have been cancelled for Monday after too many people called off work to attend Coach George Curry’s funeral.

“Logistically, we’re just not able to run,” said Superintendent Wayne Brookhart.

The district couldn’t find enough substitutes to cover all the teachers and support staff using personal days to attend the legendary football coach’s funeral, he said.

“A lot of people on our staff played for him, or had kids who played for him, or who coached other sports when he did. He just had so many connections to so many people,” Brookhart said.

In addition, hundreds of students were expected to miss school to attend the visitation and Mass, he said.

“And rightfully so, with everything he accomplished and all the lives he touched in the community,” the superintendent added.

The district still has a few snow days in reserve, so the missed day won’t have to be made up to reach the state-required minimum number of days in class, he said.

Visitation is set for 9 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1730 Fowler Ave., Berwick, followed by a Mass at 11 a.m.

A celebration of life is scheduled after the funeral at the church’s parish center.
