Car crashes in Nescopeck

A Sentra sits on the back of a tow truck after its owner ran through the stop sign at a T intersection in Nescopeck and crashed into the utility pole on the far side.

NESCOPECK — A driver speeding east on Route 339 failed to stop in time at the end of the highway and crashed into a telephone pole Sunday morning, the fire chief said.

The Silver Sentra hit the pole so hard, the car bounced back across the intersection, said Nescopeck Fire Chief Harry Knorr.

The impact dented the front of the car into a “V” shape, trapping the sole occupant inside, Knorr said.

Firefighters used wooden wedges to stabilize the car, then tore open the passenger’s side door to ease the man out.

The man was conscious and talking, Knorr said. He was taken away by Geisinger Ambulance. Knorr didn’t know where the ambulance took him, nor whether the man was buckled in.

State Police have not released the name of the driver or other information.

The accident happened around 9:30 a.m.

Fire Police from Mifflin Township Forest Rangers and Fire Co. shut down the highway at Smith Hollow Road for about half an hour while rescuers worked.

Berwick Fire Department’s rescue truck also assisted at the scene.

The car was carried away by Blaine’s Repair Service.
