Gas leak sparked power outage in Danville

DANVILLE — A reported gas leak led to a power outage here Thursday morning after PPL deenergized its lines in the area of Mill Street and Northumberland Street near CVS Pharmacy, utilities officials said.

UGI Utilities requested PPL shut down lines after a contractor reportedly struck a gas line while doing work in the 600 block of East Market Street shortly before 9 a.m.

PPL spokesperson Tracie Witter said the outage affected 708 customer,s but power was able to be restored to 443 customers by rerouting line service. Service was restored to everyone by 10:28 a.m., Witter said.

Volunteer firemen assisted local police in directing traffic where signals were not working downtown during the outage.
