Town bans overnight parking on two 'hazardous' streets for plowing

BLOOMSBURG -- The town wants to clear out its most hazardous streets of hard-packed ice and snow, so it's asking residents of Jefferson Street from Main to Sixth Street and West Fourth Street from Railroad to Market Street not to park on the streets tonight. It has also told for those with permits for three town parking lots to move their cars before 2 a.m. Thursday: * the East Pine Avenue Lot (Zone D) * the Employee Lot near St. Columba (Zone F) * the West Pine Avenue Lot (Zone I) north of Pine Avenue, including the permit area and all metered areas Those with permits for those lots can park at a meter in any other lot not in an area slated for plowing, or on Main Street until noon Thursday. Residents of West Fourth Street and Jefferson Street can park on other streets or Main Street, police say. Public Works Department Supervisor John Barton said Jefferson and West Fourth streets were in danger of becoming impassable with another snow storm. He said a combination of factors had led to the rutted, snowy conditions on Jefferson and Fourth - repeated snowfalls, along with residents shoveling or snowblowing their snow back into the street. He sympathized with residents of the narrow streets, as there isn't much room to put snow at this point. "They really just have to start piling it up in front of their cars," Barton said Barton said crews had heavily salted Jefferson and Fourth on Wednesday, and plan to have backhoes and a front loader out on the streets Thursday to remove as much snow as they can. We'll have a story on driving conditions in the Jefferson Street neighborhood in Thursday's edition.
